The global fast-food chain has removed a holiday advertisement produced using Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant public disapproval.

The 45-second film was created via AI-generated video and was originally uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Removal

Soon after it aired, audiences online criticized the implementation of AI in the advert. Several described it as "disturbing" and "poorly edited".

"This moment represents an key learning as we examine the appropriate application of generative technology," commented a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was developed for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed various situations that might go awry over the holidays, with the tagline "the most terrible time of the year".

The Trend of AI Commercials

Commercials that incorporate AI-created content have become a rising phenomenon among major companies, especially for the holiday campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has also launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because segments produced with generative AI are susceptible to degrade the longer they run, most such clips tend to be about short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also sparked concerns about job displacement in the advertising sector, with some commenters pointing out it could reduce work for actors.

Defense from the Creators

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.

Bridge claimed, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then crafted afterward "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an experiment," Bridge asserted. "It was a film."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was largely panned, the reception for other AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas ad from another major brand reportedly received a significant "favorable response" from the public.

However, other businesses have likewise received scrutiny for using AI in their campaigns. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some called "lazy" and "uncanny".

The episode underscores the evolving conversation within the advertising and creative industries about the balance between technological innovation and creative integrity.
