Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
